Chapter ten:

Blake Indigo:

Earth, In-orbit above Texas; Local time: 5:42pm Friday, the 13th of May, 2033

“Yeah. We may have to.” I said noticing a large door open by Ryan’s perch, big enough for him to fit though but it was still a tight squeeze. The corridor it lead down was slightly bigger, and two humanoid robots, easily ten foot each came towards us. They weren’t the same model as the nannybots, but they were a more resent model, despite the fact they had accumulated a bit of rust. I’d say it was about twenty years since they saw the factory line. That’s old for a robot.

I ran under Ryan for a better look. They’re chassis where orignalinly a bright green colour, but that gave way to a mismatched orange before someone tried it with blue. They had led lights for eyes and their hands consisted of two fingers and a thumb. They didn’t look happy.

“Come with us now.” The left one said seriously aiming a shoulder mounted spitfire at me. “Or we terminate the human.”

Clair Weli’sol:

I don’t say this often, but this virus was impressive. It doesn’t kill the cell, just occupy it. And when mitoses occurs, it releases the daughter cells of the virus that reproduced inside it. Not only does it alter the brain chemistry of sentient mammals and devolves them into what I can only describe as rabid animals, It forces the genetic material to flux. But for what reason? A means to what end? Reptiles are unaffected, but they become carriers.

Reading what the archives have, two to four days is all the infected mammal has with their reason. Seeing what it’s done... I couldn’t believe it. Almost reminds me of Treasion Immundifancy Virus. They were desperate, entire cities distorted, people killed, very few humans escaped with their lives. Seeing the vid feeds for myself... I was horrified.

“The DNA of the virus doesn’t appear to be from any known ecosystem.” Zane explained. “Looks artificially engineered, but that’s just my observation.”

“I’ve prepared the microscope.” Brandon annouched. The screen switched from the archived data to the microscope’s optical input. We could clearly see a single cell in white, and the virus was highlight in green.

“So. Our little friend. You’ve been causing us some problems.” Roxanne muttered, as if she was provoking it.

“Give me two hours and we can develop an antiviral protein from it.” Dad assured us.

“We don’t have the time to administer it separately to everyone over there.” I explained. “Maybe a gaseous delivery system?”

“If I had a day, maybe.”

“Hmm. Cute. Almost like a leech.” Roxanne observed.

“What?” I demanded.

“The virus, it’s latched itself to the cell membrane.” She pointed out.

That explains the unique cell mechanics. It remains inside the cell, but completely separate from it at the same time. When the cell spits, all but the original virus cell unlatches from the cell and... well the rest you already know. Even the original virus cell is copied when it splits. It’s tricked the cell in becoming apart of it.

“Cleaver basted.” I mutter. Great, she’s got me doing it.

“If the cell remains attacked to the cell wall, then nano-surgery to each cell would in a way, ‘uninfect’ the cell.” Dad explained.

“So were going to try to cure a population somewhere in the billions with a swarm of nanobots.” Roxanne exclaimed, finding flaws to our plan. “Artaigon, do you have any idea how long it will take to produce that number of nanobots. It would take days at least.”

“If we cure the immediate area on the...”

“Forget it doc. Complete eradication is the only reason they have to brake protocol.” Brandon interrupted. “Unless you have a way, bomb still going off.”

“Hell.” I cured suddenly remembering that I hadn’t set the photo of the bomb yet. If he knew what he was dealing with in the way of explosives, then it may be of help. But the bomb seemed unknown to me... “Roxanne.” I caught her attention and showed her the photo.

Her eyes widened before she stormed off yelling “Everlyn! Prepare a mental download!”

Blake Indigo:

Earth, In-orbit above Texas; Local time: 5:58pm Friday, the 13th of May, 2033

“Keep it moooo...” began one of the robots until everything suddenly stopped.

Time held still. Nothing moved, just existed. I couldn’t move, or breath, or suffocate, just think.

“Download request received. Beginning...”

A flood of information leapt into my head...

"Well, this something I thought I'd never do, I'm not one for audio journals or anything but I'm being paid for this, also something I didn't expect but I'll just roll with it." came Shane’s voice before a sigh and some static and then it blended into a slient vision of three people facing a firing squad, falling into a pit of lifeless still bodies that meet the same face. Fires blazed across the cityscape. A young man in pain as black scales warped his features and he became a dragon.

“...not even your government is aware of this new virus and it is completely different from most viruses...” Came another voice, educated, draconic and I could detect Oxford in there somewhere...

But before I could conform it, my head was assaulted with everything you could possibly know about Gill. Signed with love, from Clair. Aww.

Then it was replaced by a familiar sight... wait. How the hell did the CDC get their mitts on that?

“...ving.” R1 said as time resumed.

They kept their spitfires on at least two of us as we walked down the corridor, the clicking of the dragon’s talons echoing, as were the robot’s stomping. I tried to recall that where this corridor lead to, but all I could remember from the architecture was it had to be some sort of... docking bay?

I was right. Up ahead was a smallish space craft in the middle of a cavonious room. Two yellow lines marked where the airlock was, and a large door was where the docking bay lead out into space. The docking bay was several times larger then the cargo bay, more then enough for Ryan to stretch out his wings if he wanted to. But two armed robots were on his mind right now.

Spitfires were originally developed along side the alpha particle burst shell. The shot a single alpha particle into the target with enough force to penetrate even a dragon’s scutes. There weren't many fatal point to put an alpha particle, but it leaves you with a nasty burn,

As we walked up to the ship, I notice something on my companions faces, and every time I turned to each of them, they turn away. It didn’t take me long to release that it was worry, concern, aimed at me. At least it kept them from trying to attack the armed androids and getting themselves injured. But I felt disgusted that they were trying to protect me from something dangerous. Something that they thought would hurt me far worse then them. They were trying to keep the easily broken, fragile human unharmed. Thing was, spitfires can hurt them just as bad as they could me. And I didn’t need their protection.

The only one who needed protecting was who ever had the nerve to force us here at gun point.

“Stop.” R2 demanded. “Human continues ahead. He will leave his bag, his weapon, and his communication device behind. The rest of you remain here. Resist...” It’s spitfire twitched to make it’s point.

Now I was really boiled. Still, it someone was considerate enough to send two escorts, I should at least see what they wanted. I took off my bag, pulled out the blaster from its holster, pulled out the power cell and threw it in with the back pocket, along with my iPhone. I zipped it up and left it with Tomas before walking away.

The ship I walked to was a simple star sloop, small and versatile, they're favoured among pirates since they’re small enough to go though hyperspace, but large enough to take cargo. The lack of markings on the haul made it more likely that it was a pirate who wanted to see me. The cargo doors were left open, and the gangway left out. R1 and R2 didn't follow. I guess who ever wanted to see me, knew me enough to know that I was more concerned about their lives then my own. If I try anything, they'll be collateral damage, ending up injured or dead just because I felt lucky. Best move here is deception.

Who ever it is may have the advantage of meeting me without my equipment, but not unarmed. There was still the loaded Smith and Wesson in my duster.

In the cargo bay, I was greeted by darkness. And Mozart, or maybe it was Bach. Wasn't too familiar with the peace that was playing. The cargo bey led to the primary flight deck where a man waited. He was human with short stumpy horns growing out of his forehead, but that might of been genetic manipulation. It’s like getting a tattoo on Terra. He was very pale skinned, and his long white hair reached his shoulders. His dress said something of authority on this vessel, but the only crew I saw was the robots. He beamed a grin as I entered a room, showing almost inhuman sharp teeth.

“Hello.” I said unamused. “I don’t believe we’ve meet, I’m Blake...”

“Indigo. Yes. I know. I’m a fan of your work Mr. Indigo.” The man said with a thick English accent. “You can call me Price.”

“Caption Price. “ I look over the controls. Type seven sloop with a mark two hyperspace jump drive, mark four warp drive, one fifty cal bullet in the right place would set off a chain reaction that warps the ship into hyperspace after two minutes and gives anyone touching the controls a shock.

“I understand you wanted to see me. What’s this about Price?”

“As you know, there is a virus on the planet below. I want a sample of your blood.”

“Only if you tell me where you found this ship.”

His smile disappeared and he placed a finger to his digi-pilot. A moment later, I hear a loud roar. The bastard must of used the mind machine interface to send a command to his robot lackeys.

Glenn Kame:

Sydney, Australia, Terra - AEDT: 3:22pm, Saturday, 16th of October, 2010

It was almost as if Roxanne couldn’t get to her car fast enough. We waited in the military testing faculties, sharping our skills, only to have ourselves pulled out of virtual reality and she gave us ten minutes to prepare while she put on her make up.

I got my brass knuckles at the ready for close combat, and my F88 loaded. Filled the pockets of my vest with clips and grenades, and put a photon blaster in my leg holster.

Joey strapped into his exoskeleton that augmented his strength, speed and mounted light weaponry to his wrists, and heavier arsenal to his shoulders. Once he got it right, he folded it up into a band that was strapped tightly around his left arm.

Clair went more conservative, handing Joey a blaster and picking one out for herself before going for a modified SR-98 and shoving it into her handbag along with her research kit, and a dozen other items that seemed to fit easily into a small bag.

Zane went in for larger assault weapons, mostly because he could actuary carry them with ease, along with the standard blaster and a F88, he had everything in his backpack. The pack itself was designed in such away to allow ease of flight.

Roxanne came back and picked out one of her brother’s fold up swords and a stocked speedloaders for her Smith and Wesson colt magnum. She was read herself for a fight, again. Last time she did that, she was following Blake into a battle zone. I could smell it on her. Fear, but not of the unknown. She knew what she was getting into.

“Rox...” I began.

“I don’t know.” She answered prematurely as she produced her phone. “All I can say for sure is that reality is braking up. And this is just the beginning.” She looked down at it and to the other end she said “I’m calling for Blake. You’re obviously are not he. Where is he?”

Earth, In-orbit above Texas; Local time: 6:04pm Friday, the 13th of May, 2033

Kate was surprised to hear one of the robots buzz into life, it's weapon turning... to her. She flinched, unmoving when a loud bang rang out. Ryan roared in pain hen the helium atom burnt his gold scutes.

“Mr. Smith!” She yelled, running up to the large dragon and inspecting the burn on his chest.

She heard Blake’s bag unzip, and Tomas pulled out a titanium case with a red crescent moon affixed to the lid, just above the single latch. They both knew it had to be a medic kit. Inside, they found a small set of clean surgery equipment, bandaging and gauze, and various medication. What was unfamilur was some strange looking rods, vials of liquids, and aerosol cans labelled with “Nanite Spray.” A quick glance at the instructions told Kate that it was some sort of rapid healing spray.

When she sprayed it on the burnt scale, Ryan let out a hiss that was just audible. First, the skin under his plate healed right before her eyes. Even dragons didn’t heal that quickly naturaliy, then the broken scute began to repair itself. In a second, it was like nothing happened.

Kate then felt something jab into her wing. She growled when she saw that one of the robots were taking blood from her and stumbling inside the ship with it. The robot came back without it.

“Incoming call: Roxanne Indigo.” They heard an electronic voice announced from the front pocket. Tomas pulled it out and looked at the touch screen. It looked like a normal iPhone, except for when he put it under light. The entire phone, apart from the metal edge, turned clear and see though. He remembered that claws and old touchscreens don’t mix well together, but this one didn’t just hold up well against his ultra sharp claw, it responded to it.

Before, the phone displayed a reflexion of his face, but after unlocking the phone, that image shrunk down into the corner. The majoirty of the image was replaced by a red haired woman who had similar features to Blake, ranging from the grey eyes, the sharp cheek bones, to the pale nordic skin. The only differance other then femianie traits was her well cared for auburn hair that went past her shoulders.

“I’m calling for Blake. You’re obviously are not he. Where is he?”

Then came the sound of a gunshot, and then a loud humming noise.

Blake Indigo:

I turned back to Price after getting an idea what just happened.

“Price. Do you have a death wish? Or are you just stupid?!” I yelled at him. He remained remarkably clam.

He took a single breath. As he did, I noticed something glint around his neck, a small brass cog or something out of a clockwork mechanism. An unnerving feeling from my Arcane Perception washed over my chest. There was only one reason I got that feeling.

“I don’t like questions Shadow. Either you give me a sample of blood, or I’ll be forced to take it from them. I don’t need them alive.”

Hell. This man screamed bad news. What did he want a sample of my blood for? Never the less, I complied to keep more alpha particles from flying. I offered my wrist. If he did his research, then he probably already knows about my nanobots. He took a blood sample with a single tube of blood. One of the robots came in behind me and dropped a similar tube on the table, next to a haematological analyser.

Price put my blood sample in the analyser first. “No virus, but there’s an antiviral protein. Developed from the virus itself. Very efficient. And ideal for vacctionatons.” He threw the next vial in. His eyes widen in shock. “That’s not possible.” He pulls his head away from the sample viewer. “There’s no trace of this virus from the carrier sample. How did you cure it?”

That raised an eyebrow, along with several ‘What the Hell?’ alarms in my head.

“I don’t understand. How did I cure what?” I asked.

He marched right towards me. “Don’t play stupid with me kid. Every one of those bloody reptiles carry the perfect biological weapon. Entire civilisations will destroy themselves and devolve without a single troop being deployed. They devolve and kill themselves in the end and leave the planet empty. Imagine what it would mean to my employers.”

Employers?

After a moment silence, he grinned while walking to the flight controls. “Fine. There’s enough weapons on this ship to blow this one to the voids depts, along with it’s passengers.” He started adjusting the controls.

“Fine. I’ll tell you what you need to know.” I said, he didn’t stop. He was just moments away from powering the ship up. “And what you need to know, is that I have really good aim. Or, to be for precise...” I drew my Smith and Wesson and pulled back the hammer. He turned around, his hand resting on a lever. “Clear!”

I fired, and hit the controls right where I wanted to. It sparked, and Price let out a gargled moan before going limp. And then the engines began to cycle up. I grabbed the cog that hung around his neck. I needed to know what it was. I need to get off this ship.

I ran down to the the gangplank and pointed to the robots and yelled. “You two, up there now.” They complied without question... Hell they were dumb. Still, in about a minute, that ship is going to blow, while Ryan was lying on the ground, Kate stuffing the medic kit into my backpack, and Tomas with my phone in his claw. They all turned their attention to me, and the ship that was now collapsing inwards and was gone.

“Well what are you lot doing? We’ve got to find Shane, Jamie and the others. Now. Tomas, what are you do...” I saw Roxanne’s face in the phone. I grabbed it out of his claw. “Sorry sis, I need the Indigo building’s dedicated servers clear and Glenn needs to arrest a Doctor Seth Heart in...”

Then came the rush of air...

I’m not going to enjoy this.

The sudden rush sending all four of us though the cargo tunnels at high speed, Tomas and Kate’s limbs flailing, Ryan was being squeezed though like a bullet, but we ended up in the cargo bay all the same, being dumped into the hard metal floor. All of us apart from Ryan who had managed to snag himself in the hole in the celling.

“Out of the way.” I yelled to the two dazed drakes who looked up, and saw the large dragon hanging above them by his claws. When we got far enough away, Ryan let go and dropped the hundred feet to the floor. This time, he was prepared for it, landing like he just finished a flight with a loud bang echoing.

“See you’ve joined the party.” I heard Shane call out.

“Hey guys, looks like we have a plan.”

Glenn Kame:

My ears picked up a gunshot and her eyes widened.

“Everlyn!” Roxanne yelled before turning to me. “Do you know a Doctor Seth Heart?”

“Of the Centre for Disease Control?” Clair asked. “I had a feeling that incendiary device wasn’t regulation.”

“Which pulls him from the protection of the Population Safeguard Mandate.” Zane informed us as he zipped up his battle-pack. “And under the Sentient Rights Movement, he’s guilty of mass extermination...”

“Exterminations.” Roxanne corrected. “There’s two species involved which means there’s two charges.”

“But it’s still an Alpha Class Crime.” Joey chimed in. “That’s a death sentence for anyone involved.”

“That’s a matter for the Sentient Rights Movement. I will contact Father Francis about this on route to Melbourne. Parker, can you grab your laptop and patch it though the remote access port?”

“Which one?” Joey asked.

“Don’t even start with me.” Roxanne said half jokingly, hiding the concern in her voice.

“He has a plan right?” I asked. “Right?”

Last time he didn’t have a plan, all hell broke lose.
